Presidential Debate Round 2: Taxes

During the second Presidential Town Hall debate, specifically at 21:25 minutes into the session, a question was asked by Mary Polano towards governor Mitt Romney. The question asked was "You have stated that if your elected president you would plan to reduce the tax rates for all the tax brackets and that you would work with the congress to eliminate some deductions in order to make up the lost in revenue, concerning these various deductions, the mortgage deduction, the charitable deduction, the child's hacks credit, and education credits, what would be your position on those things which are important to the middle class?" Mitt Romney replied that he wishes to bring rates down, simplify the tax code, and have middle income tax payers to have lower taxes. Barack Obama respond to the question by stating that he wishes to giver lower and middle income tax payers relief and he has done that by 3,600, and 18 tax cuts towards small businesses. He says he is going to continue doing so and make upper class citizens pay more in taxes. The reason why he this hasn't gone through yet is because republicans wish to have tax breaks for upper class citizens and basically not cooperating with him.

  1. I've started watching this debate with a desire to be neutral. But I couldn't help but become annoyed by Romney by that 25th minute. Obama was very specific as to what he is planning to do, and Romney was just repeating one phrase"create jobs"..I must say that I am simply shocked by Romney's hypocrisy. There was a video posted earlier in September on YouTube, where he said that he doesn't care about 47% of the population (middle class) because they don't pay taxes, and now, in this debate, he is completely on the opposite side. I think that our tax system was created by very smart people, and over long period of time..it's very good that they both proposing to lower tax rates, but they're drawing the plan in a very different way, and Romney's way is not going to be taken well by US budget. 1. Yeah i do agree with you there, he is repetitive in saying he wants to create jobs but what bother me the most was that he also continues to say that he knows how to fix this or that without discussing any plan or ideas hes willing to do to fix anything. Also, creating jobs is not the problem, the problem is creating good paying jobs without wages that aren't temporary or seasonal. Jobs that we need are jobs that have salaries that are long term and support a family and living cost.

  2. While I was watching the debate, one thing came in my mind that why Romney was tricking people on Tax rate? If we need to pay the tax to boost up our economy and to lower our debt with the World Bank, we are will to do that. I will feel good to be a part of our progress. Unfortunatly, none of our candidates could say it this way. The reasong could be they were much worried of what would sound nice and provocative to voters. Romney was avoiding "deduction" portion and repeated he would lower the tax rate. He sounded to me like one of those nice advertisement,“You won a free Laptop" and then there are so many small written conditions to put you into troubles.

    1. Romney exploit that he going to lower the tax rates but when he spoke about the 47% it was never about lowering tax rates, it was about keeping rich richer and the poor poorer because in his mind the only reason why there are poor people is because they don't work hard enough. If you think about it if he claims he going to lower the tax rates for middle and lower classes but the Republicans view on taxes is to keep lower tax rates for upper class citizens how can we lower our deficit, where is this money coming from? These people are not going to just let everyone pay less and expect to get out of debt. To me, something smells a little fishy.

  3. This is pretty interesting, concerning about the taxes and what the candidates will do concerning this situation. I have heard that Romney attempted to create a raise of taxes, if he was ever to be President, to lower the debt from our country due to war. In my opinion, I believe that this is the best solution to our deficit problem, although raising taxes on the rich will give our country a greater advantage and help us out much faster in the debt.

    1. I agree with this only to the fact that raising the tax for the rich is a great idea for the deficit problem, seeing as though it worked in the Clinton era, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he is going to. Based on his political parties past, Republicans have fought to keep lower tax rates. What is there any reason to believe that now they want to raise taxes on themselves now. Think about it.
